Many middle-aged men suffer from hair loss. More and more of them are opting for treatment to help them retain their youthful appearance. For men with a receding hairline or bald spot, many cosmetic surgeons now offer hair transplants. The operation involves the removal and transplantation of around 3,000 hair follicles. It’s complex and takes several hours, and is therefore expensive. For this reason, many young men for whom hair loss runs in the family opt for a prescription drug, Finasteride, when the first symptoms appear. It was originally developed to treat benign enlargement of the prostate. In some cases, the drug can cause severe side effects that continue even after the patient stops taking it.
There’s also an alternative to transplants and medication when it comes to dealing with hair loss: a simple change of perspective. For some, baldness shouldn’t be hidden, but deliberately shown off – by wearing the remaining hair very short or shaving it off completely.
